Fulfulde is spoken by millions of people across a vast geographical area stretching across West and Central Africa and far beyond through the diaspora. This wide distribution is one of the language’s greatest strengths. It has also given Fulfulde a remarkable linguistic diversity, with regional varieties, different pronunciations, vocabulary and expressions shaped by generations of speakers and by the communities in which they live.
The Fulfulde Language Center Dictionary is an ambitious community-driven project to document this linguistic wealth and make it accessible to everyone.
Our goal is not simply to create another list of Fulfulde words and their translations. We want to progressively build a living, reliable and well-documented digital dictionary, combining the knowledge of ordinary Fulfulde speakers with the contributions of educators, researchers, linguists and other people with expertise in the language.
A Dictionary Built by the Community
One of the fundamental ideas behind the project is simple: the knowledge of a language lives first in its speakers.
Thousands of words, expressions, pronunciations and meanings are used every day within Fulfulde-speaking communities. Some are widely understood across regions, while others belong particularly to Fuuta Tooro, Fuuta Jallon, Maasina, Adamawa, Baguirmi, Borgu or other communities.
Modern technology gives us an unprecedented opportunity to bring this knowledge together.
The Fulfulde Language Center is therefore developing digital tools that will allow speakers to contribute words and information about how they know and use them. Contributions may eventually include pronunciation recordings, meanings, translations, examples of usage, dialect or regional information, and other linguistic information.
This approach allows the dictionary to grow from the knowledge of the community rather than relying exclusively on a small group of specialists.
From Contribution to Reliable Dictionary Entry
A community dictionary must be open to participation, but it must also be trustworthy.
For this reason, words submitted to the project will not automatically become published dictionary entries. Contributions will go through a process of collection, review, validation and publication.
Contributors and word collectors help us gather linguistic material. Approvers and people with appropriate language expertise examine contributions, compare information when necessary, resolve uncertainties and prepare validated entries for publication.
We also want to preserve useful information about the origin and context of contributions. A word learned from everyday use, an elderly speaker, an interview, a book or another documented source may each provide valuable evidence.
In this way, we hope to combine two important strengths: large-scale community participation and careful linguistic documentation.
One Language, Many Voices
The Fulfulde Language Center does not seek to erase the natural diversity of Fulfulde.
A word may have different pronunciations, meanings or forms in different regions. Rather than automatically treating one variety as correct and another as incorrect, the dictionary should help document these differences whenever they are relevant.
At the same time, a useful dictionary needs structure and consistency. One of our challenges is therefore to support greater standardization where appropriate while preserving information about regional and dialectal diversity.
This balance between unity and diversity is at the heart of the project.
More Than Translation
A dictionary entry should eventually tell us much more than simply:
Fulfulde word → French or English word
Where sufficient information is available, our long-term objective is to document elements such as meanings, grammatical information, pronunciation, regional usage, example sentences, translations into several languages, relationships between words, sources and other information that helps people understand how a word is actually used.
Audio is particularly important. Fulfulde is first and foremost a living spoken language, and preserving pronunciation alongside written forms can make the dictionary considerably more valuable for speakers, learners and future generations.
A Digital Resource for the Future
The dictionary is being designed as a digital resource from the beginning.
This means thinking beyond a traditional printed dictionary. In the future, structured lexical data could support educational resources, language-learning applications, research projects, spell-checking and language technologies, as well as other digital tools that we cannot yet foresee.
For African languages to have a strong place in tomorrow's digital world, we need to create high-quality digital resources today.
The dictionary is therefore not only about documenting what Fulfulde has been. It is also about helping provide the linguistic foundations for what Fulfulde can become.
Join the Project
Building such a dictionary will take time. It cannot be accomplished by one person, one institution or one region.
We need Fulfulde speakers, elders, young people, word collectors, teachers, translators, linguists, researchers, developers and volunteers. Some contributors may provide hundreds of words; others may contribute a single expression, pronunciation or piece of information that would otherwise have been lost.
Every meaningful contribution can matter.
The Fulfulde Language Center Dictionary is still being built. As the project develops, this section of our website will provide information about the dictionary, our methodology, the varieties of Fulfulde we document, our collection and validation process, and opportunities to participate.
Our language is a shared heritage. Its documentation can also be a shared responsibility.
Together, we can build a Fulfulde dictionary created with the community, validated with care, and preserved for generations to come.
