The Fulfulde Language Center is built on the belief that a language belongs first and foremost to the people who speak it. Our work brings together speakers, elders, young people, researchers, educators, technologists, and supporters around a shared responsibility: to strengthen Fulfulde and help it thrive in the modern world.
Community — Fulfulde is a living language spoken across many countries and communities. Every speaker carries valuable linguistic knowledge. We want to make it possible for ordinary speakers to contribute words, meanings, pronunciations, expressions, stories, and knowledge from their communities.
Unity in Diversity — Fulfulde has many regional varieties, accents, and traditions. We see this diversity as a richness, not an obstacle. Our goal is to build bridges across Fulfulde-speaking communities while respecting their linguistic and cultural differences.
Respect for Knowledge — We value both academic expertise and knowledge transmitted through generations. Elders, native speakers, storytellers, teachers, linguists, and researchers all have something important to contribute. Technology should help us bring these different sources of knowledge together.
Collaboration and Openness — Preserving a language of this scale cannot be the work of one person or one organization. We seek cooperation with speakers, cultural associations, educational institutions, researchers, developers, and other African language initiatives. Whenever possible, the resources we create should benefit the wider community.
Technology for African Languages — African languages should not remain spectators of the digital revolution. We believe modern technologies can help communities document their own languages, mobilize speakers across borders, validate linguistic knowledge, develop digital resources, and make African languages more visible online.
Quality and Responsibility — Community participation does not mean abandoning accuracy. Contributions to our dictionary and linguistic resources should be reviewed and validated before publication. We aim to combine broad participation with careful documentation and responsible scholarly oversight.
Transmission to Future Generations — What we document today should remain useful tomorrow. Our work is ultimately about transmission: ensuring that children and future generations can speak, read, write, study, create, and use Fulfulde confidently—including in the digital world.
Independence and Sustainability — A lasting language project needs sustainable resources. Through donations, sponsorships, partnerships, services, and community support, we aim to build a project capable of growing while remaining faithful to its mission.
Above all, we believe that the future of Fulfulde should be shaped by its speakers themselves. The Fulfulde Language Center provides a space, tools, and community to help make that possible.
